Frequently asked questions

About Integrated Functional Medicine, IIFM programs, enrolment and the practitioner network.

Integrated Functional Medicine

What is Integrated Functional Medicine?

Integrated Functional Medicine is IIFM's framework for patient centred care. It uses the systems method of functional medicine as its organising structure, and draws on perspectives from modern medicine, traditional systems of medicine, clinical nutrition, rehabilitation and allied health sciences, lifestyle and preventive medicine, and other relevant evidence informed approaches, each weighed by its evidence, within the practitioner's scope and alongside conventional care.

How is Integrated Functional Medicine different from functional medicine?

It keeps the functional medicine method, the timeline and the matrix, unchanged, and widens what the practitioner takes into account to include every kind of care a patient uses. Each approach is evaluated by evidence, relevance, safety and clinical context, and coordination across practitioners is part of the method.

Does IIFM claim that traditional and complementary approaches are as effective as conventional medicine?

No. IIFM makes no claim that any approach is superior or equivalent to another. Each specific intervention is presented with its evidence label, and conventional diagnosis and treatment are never delayed or replaced.

Which approaches does Integrated Functional Medicine consider?

IIFM draws on 8 broad domains: functional medicine and integrative approaches, modern medicine, clinical nutrition, lifestyle and preventive medicine, mind body and behavioural approaches, rehabilitation and allied health, traditional and complementary systems, and emerging sciences. They are different kinds of knowledge and are not presented as equivalent.

Will I be able to practise other systems of medicine after training?

No. Integration at IIFM means integrated understanding and coordination. Practitioners treat only within the scope of the licence or registration they hold in their own country, and those rules differ between countries.

Functional medicine

What is functional medicine?

Functional medicine is a systems based approach to clinical care that asks why a condition has developed in a particular person, traces symptoms back to underlying physiological imbalances, and builds individualised plans that work alongside conventional care.

Is functional medicine an alternative to conventional medicine?

No. IIFM teaches functional medicine as a complementary framework that depends on collaboration with the treating clinician.

Functional Medicine and Clinical Nutrition

Who is the Functional Medicine and Clinical Nutrition program for?

Healthcare professionals including medical doctors, licensed practitioners of traditional systems, nutritionists, dietitians and health coaches, as well as students in these fields. Admissions confirm eligibility for each applicant.

How long is the program and how is it delivered?

6 months, online, combining pre recorded lectures with live sessions that include interactive discussion, case studies and time for questions.

What modules does the program cover?

The program has 14 modules: Blood Sugar Dysfunction; Cardiovascular Dysfunction; Cardiometabolic Diet Therapy; Applied Clinical Nutrition; Thyroid Disorders; Inflammation and Immune Dysfunction; Gut Dysfunction; Elimination Diet Therapy; Hormones 1: Adrenal Dysfunction and Stress; Hormones 2: Male and Female; Detoxification; Health Coaching and Stress Management; Supplement and Nutrition Protocols; and FM Marketing and Growth.

Can I enrol from any country?

The program is delivered online and is open to practitioners worldwide. Eligibility depends on your qualification and professional licence, which admissions review with each applicant.

Will I receive a certificate?

Yes. Participants who complete the program are certified as FMCN Practitioners, and can then join Continuing Medical Education for graduates.

Does the program include content on traditional and complementary systems?

The program focuses on functional medicine and clinical nutrition, the method at the core of Integrated Functional Medicine. The wider landscape of care, including traditional and complementary approaches, is covered in the IIFM Knowledge Centre.

Does the program allow me to prescribe or change medication?

No. Training does not change your scope of practice. The program teaches practitioners how to collaborate with prescribing doctors on medication questions.

What is Continuing Medical Education at IIFM?

An ongoing learning opportunity reserved for graduates of the Functional Medicine and Clinical Nutrition program. It is not a separate course open to everyone.
